Volkswagen T-Cross was the most popular car model in Estonia last year

According to the sales data from the Baltic car dealer Moller Auto, the most popular vehicles in Estonia and the Baltic countries in 2022 were SUVs. The best-selling model was Volkswagen T-Cross, closely followed by Volkswagen Tiguan and T-Roc.

Popular urban SUVs accounted for more than 60% of the cars sold by Moller Auto Estonia. The top three were followed by Volkswagen Passat, Volkswagen Taigo, Volkswagen Arteon, Volkswagen Crafter, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Multivan and Volkswagen Caddy. In the electric car segment, Volkswagen ID.4 was the most popular.

Izida Gerkena, the Managing Director of Moller Auto Baltic: ‘We can see that buyers prefer to make rational choices and are opting for economical combustion engine models such as Volkswagen T-Roc, T-Cross’ and Volkswagen Taigo. Among business customers, Volkswagen Crafter and Volkswagen Caddy are clearly the top commercial vehicles.’

Gerkena adds that traditionally new car purchases are planned according to market trends and adapted to needs - for example, because of the growth of the family or a preference for more sustainable and environmentally friendly means of transport. As the EU moves towards climate-neutrality targets, the importance of producing clean cars will increase further. This is changing the mobility behaviour of people and the business environment and driving manufacturers to develop new innovative solutions.

‘It should be noted that the SUV continues to be the most popular choice for buyers in our region. I think this trend will continue and demand for this type of cars will remain high, not only because of their suitability for urban and rural driving, but also because of their large capacity, comfortable seating position and visibility on the road. While the availability of electric cars is improving, electricity tariffs are stabilising and government support remains available, the interest of buyers in electric cars will not disappear,’ predicts Gerkena.

She adds that countries can incentivise the shift to greener mobility through subsidies. Subsidies have a direct impact on the purchasing decision and should therefore not only be maintained, but also increased or at least offered to legal entities.
